Just wanted to thank Brenda from the Riverside Great Dane meetup group for her generosity and her fantastic work in putting this website for me together. It looks great and it will help the rescue in many ways.

Donna sent me a link to your new site and, Brenda, it's beautiful. I love the pictures! And I love the way everyone reaches out and helps each other!

Rene, Charleotte wanted me to thank you again for the courticy listing. She and Abby, the 6 month old, are really learning to be good, sweet girls and will be sorely missed once they find their new people and permenant homes. (Abby's mange is almost clear and I hope to get you current pictures of her soon.)

Thank you again for all of your help, knowledge and advice. Without you, Donna, and all of your contacts and friends I never would have been able to help the few dogs that I have. Actually, without you and Donna I couldn't have even tried.

Enjoy the puppies but don't let them wear you down too much. So many dogs would be lost without you and INDIAN DANE RESCUE!!!

It was so wonderful to come down to hang out with Rene and all his canine friends! The dogs are so well taken care of and the atmosphere is so peaceful! I have taken a special liking to Tucker the special needs boy. He is so sweet! All the dogs were very well behaved. You do amazing work Rene!!! Thank you for allowing me to come play with your pups!

Many Blessings,

We adopted Tiko from Indian dane rescue yesterday. When we first visited we thought he was the most amazing dog. Rene told us that he had problems in the past with aggression but had grown out of, and been trained out of it. We brought him home to our house where our friend was waiting for us. A couple of hours later our friend was attacked while patting tiko on the side. We are now trying to return the dog for more training for aggression and a refund of our money because we were told he was no longer aggressive. We were then told we could return him but with no refund. This was a poor experience. I am thoroughly dissapointed with this organization.

Perhaps Paul should also mention that the day after Tiko was in his new home Paul was informed by his landlord that Tiko wasn't able to stay in the house but only outside. This after Indian Dane Rescue made an exception to the rule. We'll let every one draw their own conclusions from this.

My wife and I have had two experiences with Rene and both of them were great. The first was when we adopted our beloved Gigi. Because Gigi had severely fearful behavior, Rene was very careful to screen anyone interested in her. We had to really lay out our commitment to Gigi ahead of time, driving down to the San Diego area twice, spending a lot of time at the rescue to get Gigi used to us, etc. Finally we were allowed to take her home and she's been the light of our life. We were always grateful to see how carefully Rene places his dogs.

The other experience with Rene had us bringing a dog to him. We rescued another Dane from a different rescue who turned out to be extremely dog aggressive. We hired a trainer and did everything we could to make her functional in our lives but it was just unmanageable. We were really at the end of our rope until we called Rene and asked if he could take our dog on. He did gladly. We know she's getting the best care and training there and that Rene would never place her in a home until she was ready and the home was a good fit.

Over the years Rene has always made himself available to answer questions about feeding, training, illness, etc. Danes are his passion and his great work this amazing breed has really brought a lot of joy into our lives.

My family and I recently were lucky enough to visit Rene and his beautiful Dane's. I had gone there to visit my beautiful new baby, Dutchess. Rene was absolutely wonderful, he made it an experience I will never forget. He sat down and answered every question I had and took the time to make sure our home would be a great FOREVER home for Dutchess. He put no pressure on me to take any of the beautiful Dane's home, and also was sure we understood the work that goes into having a Dane. We had some schedule conflicts and Rene gladly worked with us so we could make Dutchess our new family member. I was recommended to Indian Dane and I will do the same. To not recommend someone to Rene would truely be robbing them of the experience of a lifetime! So, thank you Rene, for doing what you do and for my best friend Dutchess!

My wife and three of my children drove 2 1/2 hours to visit Rene and add a new family member for our daughter Devon. We have two other dogs and a number of smaller animals and it was important that whoever came home with us would be the "perfect" fit for our family. After much soul searching and bonding, Devon decided that Zeus was the one. We could not be happier! Zeus loves his new animal friends and is fascinated by Devon's three rats. When he gets up in the morning, he visits our German Shepherd mix - Rocky, first, then the rats and then Devon followed by everyone else. He loves to play with Rocky, and cuddles on the couch with all of us when it is time to settle down.
Our older Lab mix, Blaze, is relieved that he no longer has to entertain Rocky and can relax in his "retirement".
I highly recommend Indian Dane Rescue and Rene to anyone considering a Great Dane as a companion. Rene has a deep passion for Great Danes and a comprehensive expertise of the breed. He answered our questions and concerns and wanted to make sure Devon was getting the right dog.
Thank you so much for Zeus. He is a wonderful, amazing, sweet, and goofy addition to our family.

There is no one else I will trust my beloved Bella to, but Rene and his Indian Dane rescue when we are out of town. His advice was extremely helpful when we first adopted her (although we didn't not find her from him)...his love for the breed is very apparent. Thank you!

I adopted Dorian, or as my sons call him, "the beast" in 2007. Rene was fantastic in relieving my concerns over D's physical impairments (he is deaf and sight impaired). D is the epitome of gentle giant and my best friend since the boys are grown and gone. I spent much of Rene’s time asking questions and visiting the dogs, I very much appreciate the time he took out of his schedule to accommodate me. D has been such a joy that I don’t think I will ever want another dog that is not deaf!

We went up a couple years ago to see Hamlet. The dogs were so well behaved for so many in one area and another one inparticular, Maddi would not leave us alone unless we continually pet her. Needless to say, we could not just leave with Hamlet alone, we took Maddi too! These two are inseparable!! I always tell people about where we got them and highly recommend the great dane breed!

Rene,
Thank you again for all your patience and assistance while we made the tough decision of which one of the amazing rescue dogs we would make our own. I was undecided for two hours (!) and not once did I feel rushed or pressured. My daughter still talks about sweet Gabby and I know there will be one lucky family to get Terra. Our ultimate choice - the male of the six 3-mo old puppies - has been a dream and thus far, a good fit. We love "Otis"!

Thank you again, Rene, and I hope to be back soon! :)

Thank you, thank you, thank you!! Our girl Kalliope "Kalli" aka Lilly (are you confused? Kalli isn't, she picked up her new nomenclature in 10 minutes!) She's a joy! So incredibly goofy, sweet, kissy, and smart, we can't say enough! She's the star no matter where she goes, but she's incredibly modest! As soon as I can talk my spouse into another, we'll be back!!

Rene...

I just visited your site before referring one of our Meetup members who is interested in adopting an older Dane, and was sad to read the news about Amy. I think I met Amy once when I met you at a Meetup in Rancho Bernardo awhile ago. It was our only encounter, but since then I've heard nothing but good things about your passion for helping these Gentle Giants.

On behalf of my pack, Titan and Ari (both deaf Danes, like Amy) and Diego (my German Shepherd) please accept our deepest sympathies for your loss. Losing a companion as wonderful as a Dane is tough... losing a special-needs companion is even harder.

Our thoughts are with you during this difficult time.

Diana, Titan, Ari & Diego

Please accept our deepest sympathy for the passing of your beloved Amy.I'm sure
she has a big fluffy couch in heaven.

Hi Rene,

I just wanted to share what a wonderful experience we had getting our Dane thru Indian Dane Rescue. You were so patient while my children and I were trying to decide on which puppy to chose from-not an easy task! And only now, do I fully understand why there are so many cartoon characters about Great Danes! "Bentley" is the funniest, goofiest, comical dog I have ever come across. She's a giant love and I'm so happy that I found her, and your rescue. I drop your name anytime I hear of someone talking about getting a dog. Have you thought about posting rescue information on Facebook? I don't know if that sounds too cliche, but it's another great way to get your name and rescue out there.
Again, I want to thank you. I'll be sending you a Christmas card that includes the 3 dogs and 4 children-it's quite a sight that generally causes people to stop and stare!
Best wishes,
Michelle Gronewold and family

We adopted Mack on 9/5/2009 and instantly bettered the quality of our lives! It was an eight hour ride back from Escondido to San Jose and Mack was a pure joy on the ride (and we have since learned that the only thing Mack likes better than a car ride is sticking his face in a running sprinkler head).

It was obvious to us that Rene took care of all the Great Danes we saw. Mack was in great shape and Rene had all his previous information (birthdate, shot records, certificates, etc...).

Mack has been a quick learner, and is extremely balanced around other dogs and humans. He bonded with us on our drive home and adapted to our home like he has never lived anywhere else. It was an unexpected pleasure to have a Great Dane that is already house broken, docile, affectionate, and well adjusted to a leash. Since he has been with us he has already learned sit, stay, go lay down, go to your crate, get in the car, and lets go for a walk. Considering our active outdoor lifestyle it has been a dream having a four legged family member that can go on a five mile hike and do more than just keep up.

Mack has become the prince of the neigborhood. He truly has united the dog community in downtown San Jose as everyone looks forward to seeing us with Mack so they can bring out their own pups for socializing. Mack is the balanced dog of the neighborhood and other "unmanageable" dogs seem to chill when they are in the presence of the Mack-Daddy. He is truly our pride and joy.

We are in awe of the wonderful thing Indian Dane Rescue is doing for Great Danes, and forever greatfull that Rene introduced us to our newest family member. Mack is a blessing on four legs.

I just love this wonderful site! We have a Great Dane puppy, now over a year and a half old named Princeton.
He's the love of our life, but boy is that big boy a training challenge.

Just last year at this time, his nickname was Mr. Shark, but he's improving and becoming one of the best boys ever!

We adopted Athena from Indian Dane Rescue a year ago and we could not be happier to have her as part of our family! She has overcome the rough childhood she had and is a happy and wonderful girl. Indian Danes is a haven for these most wonderful animals and our family hopes that more and more people reach out to help support such a wonderful group!

Our hearts also go out for the sad loss of Amy. We had the pleasure to meet her when we went to get Athena. Amy was truly a spectacular gentle giant who you could not help buy love when you met her.

Our family adopted Sukee in Dec 2009 and Rene was so patient while we made our choice! (We were so pleased to see that Dotty has also been adopted)Sukee is just a jewel! She loves playing with Bubba (our adoped Great Pyrenees). It is as if they are brother and sister. She is so tolerant of Louie (our Boston Terrier rescue), and his anxiety issues! We are seriously considering adopting one more Dane this year! Thank you so much for giving all these wonderful dogs a chance!

Hey Rene,

Just wanted to say thank you again for helping us out with Chiquita our F. blk dane about 1 1/2 years ago or so. We really miss her, unfortunatly the timing was off when we had purchased her and our little chihuahuas were not getting along with her.We still have our Chi's but they are getting older now.I know that one day we will get another dane to be part of our family. Giving her up was one of the hardest things I ever had to do.Really mean it..Thanks again....Sanchez Family

Yesterday my daughter and I drove down to Indian Dane to have a look at Jake, a mix. We were stunned at the gentleness of these beautiful animals and of Rene's amazing ability to keep everything so calm and well managed. He spent quite a while answering every question we had and we never felt rushed in anyway. We have completely fallen in love with Jake and Lola and are waiting to hear from Rene. What a wonderful human being to have built a Heaven on earth for these beautiful angels! Thank you Rene, from Lanie and Miako

Rene,
I have been wanting to thank you for allowing Bonnie to be a part of our life. We rescued Bonnie a few years ago and she has blended beautifully with our family. She adores and protects my 2 & 4 year old. Bonnie has been diagnosed with Addison's Disease which is extremely rare in the breed. One day we found her in a "come like" state and rushed her to the e.r. It was then that we found out she was having an Addisonian crisis. This disease affects the adrenal glands and causes a stress response which can be deadly if not treated. She required injections monthly of a steriod named Percortin and takes Predinosone daily. We are happy to do whatever it takes to keep our girl healthy and so far she has done fantastic! I just wanted to let you know that we are grateful for your work and it is important to pass this kind of information on for educational purposes. Thank you for your dedication and kindness. Sincerely, Julie & Kevin Armbruster & family & Bonnie!

Hello Rene,
I was watching Animal Cops, Phoenix, and it was the episode that had Tarquin the Great Dane that had been neglected in his owners back yard. I am so glad to read that Tarquin has been adopted.I have been doing research and getting all my ducks in a row, so to speak, I plan to adopt a Great Dane in a couple of years. I have wanted a Great Dane since the mid-1970's, but never got one, there were other lessons for me to learn before I felt ready for the honor of having one of these gentle beings in my life.

Ten years ago, we adopted a wonderful 1 1/2 year old female from Gail and John Neet. In April of this year we had to lay our "Dana" to rest. We had such a void in our lives that we knew we had to find another sister for our labrador who was very lonely.
Less than a month later, Rene Kiel from the Indian Dane Rescue, filled that void with our beautiful two year old female, Duchess. She is such a delight. Originally, a family adopted Duchess from Rene when she was 6 months old to be a buddy of another dane they already had. The family had small children so the dogs were left outside all of the time lacking in love and attention. After a year and a half later, the grandparents stepped in, "rescued" them and brought them back to Rene. We adopted Duchess within 3 weeks of her being with Rene. She has brought so much love, laughter, fun and energy back to our family. If we didn't know better, we would think she is still a puppy. She has definitely found a forever home with us. Thank you Rene for all that you do for these beautiful, loving, and gentle animals. You're knowledge, patience and love is greatly admired and appreciated.

Sincerely,
Ron and Cindy Lane

How to wash a great dane: I am so proud that I outsmarted her finally - I have to post this...

1. Define bath tub / tub thing she will lay down in. Needs to be in a small area.
2. Fill tub with cool water. (leave room for dane)
3. Leave dane alone in hot room with tub. This may be a bathroom in the summer, or one with a spaceheater in the winter. This may be an open area in the yard.
4. Wait 5 minutes.
5. Come back, is dane in tub? If yes, wash dane lovingly. If no, verify conditions and return to step 4.
6. Hug. Prepare towel. Then open door, and let the dane out. You may want to run, or cover yourself if the dane is a puppy and responds to a bath with rambunctiousness.
7. After applying this strategy about 10 times, my dane concluded that she liked water, and all I have to do is fill up the tub and she jumps in.
note: if this doesn't work, don't turn up the heat until the dog gets heat stroke.... and don't just leave them there all day....

We had purchased Hamlet and Maddi years ago. This year we lost our beloved Hamlet and thought we would just have one great dane. That lasted maybe a month and it was back to Indian Dane where we met Rosco! What a delight! He makes us laugh when he backs up to the couch and sits and it doesnt matter if it is the couch or a lap! He fit in immediately and Maddi even does a minute romp around the living room even as old as she is! Rosco is so spoiled where Hamlet wasnt allowed to get on the couch papa lets this one take it over! Rosco even lets the grandson waddle after him while he runs away in chase and catch game...We know when the time comes we will go back to Indian Dane for the next perfect dane!
